This week’s edition of Tabulation Tuesday looks at how employer-sponsored health insurance deductibles in Tennessee have changed over the past 15 years.

- About 45% of all Tennesseans are covered by health insurance that they purchase through an employer. This type of coverage is often called employer-sponsored insurance.
- A health insurance deductible is the amount of out-of-pocket health care spending that must be met each year before an insurance policy begins to pay.
What We Tabulated:
- The percent of employer-sponsored plans in Tennessee that have a deductible.
- Average deductibles for employer-sponsored plans for single and family coverage in Tennessee.
What We Learned:
- Nearly all employer-sponsored health insurance plans in Tennessee require deductibles. From 2002-2016, the share of plans with deductibles increased from 60% to 94%.
- From 2002 to 2016, the average deductible for single coverage in Tennessee employer-sponsored plans increased by 341% from $486 to $2,142.
- From 2002 to 2016, the average deductible for family coverage in Tennessee employer-sponsored plans increased by 252% from $1,039 to $3,662.
