The Sycamore Institute would like to offer a warm welcome to two new interns who are working with our staff this summer. We asked Nick and Lauren to share a little bit about themselves below.
If you or someone you know are interested in an internship with The Sycamore Institute, please visit SycamoreInstituteTN.org/jobs. Applications for Fall 2018 internships are due July 13.
Now, let’s meet Nick and Lauren!
Nick
Name: Nicholas Box
Undergraduate Studies: Indiana University, majored in Law and Public Policy
Graduate Studies: Indiana University, pursuing a Master of Public Affairs with concentrations in Policy Analysis and Health Policy
Hometown: Mt. Juliet, Tennessee
Why did you want to intern at The Sycamore Institute?
I moved away from TN for my education and am looking forward to a move back when I finish up my schooling next year. Sycamore provides me with the perfect opportunity to gain a better understanding of the players and perspectives surrounding the policy debate in my home state, while also improving upon the analytical skills I have been developing through my schooling.
Where do you want to be in 15 years?
In the White House, informing the policy debate at the highest level of government.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
I have six siblings.
Lauren
Name: Lauren Taylor
Undergraduate Studies: Clemson University, majored in Sociology
Graduate Studies: Vanderbilt University, pursuing a Master of Arts in Medicine, Health & Society
Hometown: Roanoke, Virginia
Why did you want to intern at The Sycamore Institute?
I came across The Sycamore Institute when I was doing research for my Masters’ Thesis. It was refreshing and extremely helpful to read nonpartisan, objective and informative analyses on all of the imminent healthcare and public policy change that have been occurring across the state. Although relatively new to Tennessee and the public policy realm, I have become enthralled with the intricacies of the healthcare system and the impact that local government and policies can have. Through an internship at The Sycamore Institute, I am hoping to glean an in-depth and hands-on experience that will not only aid in my own interests, but provide a strong foundation in good research practices regarding timely and imperative health policies.
Where do you want to be in 15 years?
My future plans are to pursue a PhD in either Health Policy or Sociology. In 15 years, I would hope to be at a top academic research institute conducting my own studies that focus on health disparities in health policy, and mentoring the next generation of students. I could also see myself working in the private sector to inform and propose local or state policies using evidence-based research.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
I am training for my first full marathon that I will be running in this fall.
