Meet Our Summer 2022 Intern: Sydney

The Sycamore Institute would like to offer a warm welcome to Sydney Fischer, one of our interns for this summer. We asked Sydney to share a little bit about herself below. If you or someone you know are interested in an internship with Sycamore, please visit SycamoreInstituteTN.org/jobs. Applications for Fall 2022 internships are due July 15. Now, let’s meet Sydney!

Name: Sydney Fischer

Current School: Middle Tennessee State University

Major: Political Science

Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona

Why did you want to intern at the Sycamore Institute?

I wanted to intern for the Sycamore Institute after reading their reports on education funding while trying to understand more about the subject. Anyone who knows me can attest to how passionate I am about education policy and with funding being so crucial to quality policy decisions, I was eager to learn more. After seeing that they were a nonpartisan policy center, I was set on applying.

Where do you want to be in 15 years?

In the future, I would enjoy working in the field of global education or development policy. I would be ecstatic to someday work for the United Nations, but I would be equally happy being a policy director for a non-profit or government agency where I could make an impact.

What are your interests and activities outside of school?

Outside of school, I tend to stay pretty busy with the hobbies I have collected over the years. On any given day you can find me sewing, cooking, hiking, or writing short stories. I can successfully say I have tried baking over 30 chocolate chip cookie recipes, but I am still in search of the perfect recipe.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

My parents practically named me Sydney after watching The American President! I’m not so sure that I will be an environmental lobbyist someday, but they are pretty proud of themselves for knowing early on that I would be involved in politics.
